Google Calculator Trick

I'm one of those people who think that Google is one the best things ever invented after the Internet or <insert your favorite thingamajig here.>. I just love them. In fact, I already sold my non-existent soul to them for a few adsense dollars..

Living in the Philippines, I often deal with foreign currencies other than our own, mighty (government says so),  Philippine Pesos. It's hard not to do any financial calculation without thinking of the US Dollar, the Singapore Dollar, the Euro, sometimes the Chinese Yuan RMB or Thailand's Baht THB

Sun soft-launches new single-SIM Double Unlimited

Sun finally decides to meet Globe's challenge head-on.

Sun 2-in-1 SIM

They've just repackage their double-unlimited promo and is now issuing two types of voice services in one SIM - just like Globe is doing with their Duo service.

It's also cheaper: P249 per month add-on for postpaid users (while Globe's Duo is P399 a month). Sounds like a good deal to me.

Sun Broadband Wireless - force Huawei modem to 3G mode only

Recently got Sun Cellular's Broadband Wireless (SBW) service. They provided a Huawei e1550 USB modem which came with little documentation, and are meant to be Plug N Play for Windows users.

I called their technical support number and asked why I'm only getting 80kbps in my area even when I have 3.5G/HSDPA signal. I was told that I have to set the modem configuration (using software that came with it. Apparently, there's some storage space built in to the device) to "WCDMA only".

Why isn't SMS cheap in the Philippines?

If you're Filipino, it's quite unlikely that you haven't heard of what "txt" (sms) is. You're most like to have at least one "celfon" - a mobile phone, in your pocket or dangling around your neck. If you live in large urban cities, you may even have more than one phone or use more than SIM card (the arrival of dual-sim phone has eased many a person's burden of carrying an extra phone or two)

Secret Sun Trick - send email to Sun Cellular subscribers phones for free.

I discovered this nifty trick by accident the other day.

If you have MMS enabled, people can actually email you a message and you actually get it as an MMS. Some things to remember:

  • Recipient must have activated their MMS service
  • Email must be in plain text format, otherwise it will ask the recipient to retrieve the message from the Internet, which kinda defeats the purpose of "free and instant" messaging.

Nintendo DS as eBook reader

Ok, I like games. Scratch that, I love games. But more than any game, I love reading. In fact, it's not a hobby but a vice.

I have a Nintendo DS but lately I noticed that I'm using it mostly to read eBooks. And that games are now mostly used to "rest" when I get tired of reading.

Greenfly - an LPG-powered motorcycle designed for and by a real biker.

This little baby runs on cheap LPG! You either love or hate the design, but it certainly evokes strong feelings in you.

Discovery Channel's Theme Song "I love the whole world."

Do you still get amazed by how little we know?

That, in this five-billion year old Earth where humans only started to exist more or less 60,000 years ago we still are discovering new things. Amazing!

Review: TCL A288 Dual SIM phone

TCL A288

Summary

The TCL A288 is a dual-band (GSM 900/ GSM 1800) phone in a candy-form factor. Its 260,000 color TFT touch screen, QVGA (240 × 320), 2.4-inch is bright and readable even under bright outdoor conditions. Standby time is approximately 3-5 days, depending on usage.

LBC Express 24-hour nationwide *guaranteed* delivery service - not!

I had an urgent parcel sent over from Manila to Zamboanga last Sunday through LBC Express. They're a local courier with a fairly good reputation.  I was really in a bit of a bind so I got them instead of my preferred OCS/Republic Courier service, another courier which I find more reliable and pleasing to deal with - except they don't have as many outlets in Metro Manila.
